The latest developments in oil spill detection come from Norway where sensor specialists Miros and Ocean Visuals have united their efforts in order to enhance the detection capacity of oil spills.

Their aim is to provide remote sensors that can meet surveillance and verification requirements in an efficient manner, ensuring optimal detection.

The two companies offer sensor systems that don't require too much effort to deploy as they are easily mounted on the vessels' topside.

Let's look into the specific capabilities of each company's sensor technology:

Miros

Their radar surveillance and detection system is based on IR. It is able to spot and track oil spills over vast areas.

The CEO of Miros, Andreas Brekke, declared that the innovation stemming from the collaboration of the two companies lies in their joint capacity to solve a larger number of operational challenges their clients are faced with.

He further stated that they are now capable of detecting oil spills on wider distances in different operational contexts due to their technology's high degree of automation.

Moreover, the Miros detection system is already in use and quite popular; approximately 70% of the oil spill response vessels used by the European Maritime Safety Agency uses their OSD recovery system.

Ocean Visuals

Their system is called HLIF LiDAR and it provides top detection and verification capabilities through its high-resolution point measurements.

Ocean Visuals' technology is able to detect the oil on the water's surface and in the water column, or in ice lush and submerged oil through their Oil-in-Water Locator. Simultaneously, the locator can also classify the oil spills. Moreover, their system's high precision decreases the chance of generating a false alarm.

The CEO of Ocean Visuals, Christian Testman, also explained more about this cooperation stating that "We are excited to cooperate with Miros and supporting their large client base in this space. This is an important first step towards true sensor fusion in oil spill detection."

Miros and Ocean Visuals cooperation aims to provide a holistic sensor technology, equipped with a unique set of features for effective oil detection and verification.

Bottom line is that this partnership is expected to provide new capabilities in the field of oil spills detection that may help clients achieve a faster and more efficient discovery and classification.
