Skin Cancer Symptoms

Usually there is no pain associated with skin cancer. The main symptom consists in the appearance of a modified area of skin or some skin damage. The skin modification varies in form and appearance depending on the type of skin cancer. For example:

  • BCC type of skin cancer usually consists in the appearance of:
    • dome-shaped bumps often covered by superficial blood vessels. These bumps usually have a very slow development and a shiny translucent texture, although pigmented bumps may occur, too. The pigmented bumps may be similar to colored moles and the only way to tell the difference is usually through removal and analysis This type of cancer rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but may damage the look of skin especially on face or other exposed areas;
    • patches of raw dry skin may also be linked to BCC (superficial BCC) on the chest or back
  • SCC type of skin cancer - SCC usually appears in the following forms:
    • crusted reddish area of skin
    • crusted-over patch of skin
    • non-healing ulcer

Many skin cancers start as non-cancerous or precancerous lesions of the skin. These non-cancerous changes in the skin are referred also by the name of dysplasia and usually comprise the following:

  • Moles (nevus) – consist in growth on the skin and are quite common in many individuals (in a number between 10 and 40). Moles may be flat or raised. They may begin as flat and later become raised. Moles are usually round or oval (up to ¼ inch in diameter) and of various color (such as pink, brown or skin color). Please note that abnormal moles (dysplastic nevi) may also appear usually having irregular shape with fading borders and smooth or rough surface. Dysplastic nevi are also larger in diameter and mixed color including pink, tan, and brown. Moles may develop into melanoma, yet very few moles evolve in skin cancer. However, people with many moles have a higher possibility to develop melanoma.
  • Actinic keratosis - consists in a patch of rough skin usually of red or brown color. It may later develop into a SCC type.
