Melanoma Preventive and Risk-Minimizing Hints

While melanoma cannot be controlled, each of us may take preventive actions that will reduce melanoma risks or at least improve our chances to deal with this disease which, is treatable in early stages.

Here are some hints for preventive and helpful measures:

  • Regular self-examinations of the skin on the whole body including (but not limited to): the scalp (below hair), the torso, the arm and legs, the sole, the hands and nails (skin below the nails), the neck, armpits, as well as mucous membranes such as lips and those inside the mouth or vagina.
  • Regular medical checks, especially for individuals with a high-risk;
  • Wearing sun screen and/or protective clothing during prolonged outside activity involving sun exposure such as: tanning, walking, outside sports, outside work, driving. Please note that some UV exposure will also occur in cloudy days. At the same time, there is some information suggesting that a little sun exposure is actually good for the organism and may decrease the risk for melanoma. Thus, “all in moderation” seems to apply in this case;
  • Being informed with the current discoveries and awareness level (through internet, media, conversation with your doctor). This will enable you to be aware and check individual specific risks and catch any potential melanoma case as early as possible.
  • Prevent or diminish pollution exposure – since there are many new pollutants and our understanding and awareness is increasing every day, it is best to prevent or diminish exposure to any environmental pollutants. For a practical guide, click here.
  • Do not disturb existing moles, nodules or skin lesions accidentally or through friction with certain clothes. Sometimes, disturbance of existing skin conditions may trigger their transformation into cancerous skin conditions, including possibly melanoma. If you have moles and other skin conditions, try not to scratch, wound, or disturb them in any other way.
